Airbrush is makeup sprayed onto the skin using an airbrush instead of using with brushes, fingers, or other things. An airbrush is characterized by 3 major parts. A powered compressor is used to create an even and controllable airflow through a medical grade hose. The hose connects to a metal, trigger-actioned gun. An airbrush system can be altered to suit every type of makeup application. It is popular in film, theater, bridal makeup, ect. Systems designed for personal cosmetic use in the home are also available. Airbrush systems designed for home use are usually smaller and work at a lower pressures than systems used in industrial applications.

Acrylics, even heavy body acrylics have a tendency to be “softer” and less viscous than oil paints. In addition, the paint film tends to shrink a bit after drying. How do you get those strong brushstrokes you see in work of painters like Van Gogh or the impressionists, abstract expressionists who worked in oil paints?
Try adding in modeling paste or flexible modeling paste.
Professor Elahe Shahideh of the University of San Francisco asked me how to achieve this look and in this video I offer some suggestions.
I make analogies with food to describe various levels of thickness. “Crisco” is a brand name for vegetable shortening. Similar to the thickness of lard. 1:10
Modeling paste has a high content of marble dust so it is susceptible to surface cracking on flexible supports. Save it for rigid supports such as wood panels, masonite or canvas boards.
2:22 Modeling pastes and molding pastes dry with a duller sheen than acrylics.
3:00 I suggest mixing gloss heavy gel with flexible modeling paste to achieve a satin look.
3:42 mixing blue paint with matte super heavy gel (which is what I happened to have on hand.)
3:45 How much to add in? Start with 40 – 50% medium to color ratio. Practice and adjust to suit your desired look and feel. There are no RULES! You decide through experimentation.
4:49 Mixing red with modeling paste 50/50 ratio.
5:15 To get a strong brushstroke choose brushes with thick, stiff bristles – not soft bristles. Beware that natural bristles such as hog hair get soggy and lose their spring when soaked in water. There are many synthetic bristle brushes that are developed specifically for acrylics and retain snap and spring when wet.
6:27 Modeling pastes have less shrinkage from wet to dry because of the aggregates in the formula. These aggregates also make them OPAQUE. So they can’t be used when transparency is required such as in glaze applications.
7:00 adding crimson into the modeling paste. The color shifts slightly because of the aggregates. So I used 30/70 medium to paint ratio.
8:34 experiment with ratios
8:50 introduction of a chemical thickening agent – in this case Liquithick. I use only a pea-sized amount – always less than 25%! Chemistry in different brands varies so choose a thickener of the same brand as your paints. The thickening agent creates a strong paste like texture similar to printmaking inks.
11:37 mixing Liquithick into the existing modeling paste and paint mixture to get high peaks in the paint that will stay when dry
12:30 adding Liquithick to flexible modeling paste and paint mixture.
MIX THOROUGHLY to incorporate the chemistry fully.
