We’ve changed the way we add air to our RV’s tires. Before, we used our diesel pusher’s on-board air compressor, but this new way applies to any type of RV, so this tip isn’t just for owners of large motorhomes.

If you want one of these awesome Viair RV air compressors for your rig, you can find it here on Amazon:

    http://bit.ly/viair-400p-rv

If you’ve seen our previous videos about adding air to high-pressure RV tires, you know that using the on-board compressor isn’t as simple as it sounds. Besides the problem of the pressure cycling up and down below our required tire pressures as part of its normal operation, we also try to avoid idling our engine more than absolutely needed. We hate being an annoying neighbor by polluting a campground with diesel exhaust and noise just because our tires happen to need air. Our new solution makes us a better neighbor.

If you’ve seen very many of our videos, you know that we’re all about finding money-saving ways to solve RV issues, but sometimes a top-of-the-line solution is the best solution, and you get what you pay for.

We discovered Viair, a manufacturer of ruggedized portable compressors, designed to handle more demanding situations, like filling large off-road vehicle tires. We like the fact that they make a model specifically designed for RVers, which got stellar reviews on Amazon, so of course that’s the one we ordered.

Watch our first RV tire inflation video here:

    Watch the follow-up video here:

Some comments from Viair about model choices:
“If the tires you’re planning to service need 90 to 120 PSI, I recommend looking at the 300P or larger. The 300P is actually capable of building 150PSI and it will do the job faster than the 88P. If you have more than 4 tires to top off, then you should choose a compressor within the 400P series. If you are going to inflate rear duallys, the 400P-RV is the best option. The 88P is a great affordable compressor for trucks with 33 inch tires or smaller and can inflate up to 120PSI. It can also inflate the occasional flat. However it is the smallest compressor designed for truck tires and RV tire inflation.”

Full-Time RVers since April 11, 2003, we share DIY (do it yourself) RV maintenance, repair, travel, upgrade and operational tips & tricks.

While we’re not RV technicians, we’re very mechanically inclined and have learned a lot about RV systems over the years. We’ve handled most of our own minor service, maintenance and upgrade work on both of our RVs.

We meet lots of newer RVers who are eager to learn some basics about using, maintaining and caring for their rigs. After more than a decade on the road, we’re happy to share what we’ve learned (some of it the hard way). ;-) We hope our experience can help other RVers go DIY, saving time & money while experiencing the satisfaction of a job well done. We’re handy RVers, not professional technicians. We’re happy with the techniques and products we use, but be sure to confirm that all methods and materials you use are compatible with your equipment and abilities. Regardless of what we recommend, consult a professional if you’re unsure about working on your RV. Any task you perform or product you purchase based on any information we provide is strictly at your own risk.

We sometimes receive products for evaluation at no cost, but our opinions are our own and we only feature products we personally use, love and can recommend to friends with complete confidence.
